Maintain your beautiful smile with early gum disease treatment.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Gum disease is a progressive disease that occurs when excessive plaque and tartar buildup around the tooth attract bacteria. Statistics tell us that an estimated 75% of Americans have some level of gum disease and only some end up seeking treatment. If left untreated, gum disease can wear down the tissues and even cause tooth loss. An active infection in the mouth may spread to other parts of the body, so patients with gum disease may be at an increased risk of developing cancer, having a stroke, or being diagnosed with diabetes. This is a preventable and treatable condition but there is no cure. We offer advanced periodontal therapy to get gum disease under control.

Stress

Genetics
Research suggests that some people may be genetically susceptible to gum disease.

Early Stages of Gum Disease

The early stages of gum disease are often accompanied by symptoms such as tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, and inflammation of the gum tissue. This stage (gingivitis) is reversible with appropriate oral care. If left untreated, the condition will progress to periodontitis where some gum recession can occur and then advanced periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss. This is a progressive infection in the mouth and can break down supporting tissue structures in a relatively short period of time.

Gum Disease Diagnosis

We can detect an infection in the mouth or progressing gum disease with digital X-rays and a thorough oral exam. We will use a periodontal probe to measure pocket depth and determine which stage of gum disease you are in. Treatment for gum disease may include laser gum disease therapy, scaling and root planing, and periodontal therapy. After the infection has been treated and we have gum disease under control, you may need gum recession surgery or cosmetic periodontal surgery to restore the gum line and maintain a beautiful smile.
